The road to holiness
To those who have been chosen in the providence of God the Father, who are travelling on the road to holiness in the power of the Spirit, who are destined to obey Jesus Christ and to share in the new relationship with God which God made possible by his sacrificial death.
1 Peter 1:2 - William Barclay's Translation
That scripture is from Barclay's translation. It gave me a real lift! I got excited by the phrase "travelling on the road to holiness". Actually, it caught me by surprise. I had never thought of my relationship to holiness that way before. This gives a real insight into what has been happening. It made me recognise how I've been thinking of holiness as a sphere I'm meant to be living in and not realising it's also a state I'm meant to be "on the road to".
Have your failures at living in the sphere of holiness discouraged you? Perhaps you have even wondered why you bother trying when you fall out of it so often. Well, now recognise it's a journey; you're on the road to holiness! God didn't give you instant holiness when you came to Jesus. He set you on the road to it. Pick yourself back up, dust yourself off and get back on with the journey! A journey is all about making progress - don't let a fall throw you off course. Keep going onwards to holiness.
Follow after holiness - pursue it! Keep coming up to holiness each day of your life so that day by day you get your life more and more in a sphere of holiness. Make your journey to holiness in the same way that Jesus lived in holiness. How did He live in holiness? By the power of the Spirit! Heb.12:14, 1 Pet.1:15, Heb.9:14.
With fresh courage travel onwards!
