Live in the Lord's light

by Pastor Simon

Jesus said to the people, 'I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.'

John 8:12 - New Living Translation

During my morning devotions I look to the Holy Spirit's prompting for what Bible passage I should reflect on. One particular morning that prompting was to read John chapter 8. I sat there praying and trying to drink it in when I realised I was straining to read it. The weather had changed dramatically over night and now the rain clouds were making it quite dark in my room. Realising this, I turned on the light.

The light came on and I thought, "Why did I continue straining to see in the darkness?" Isn't this an illustration of what we so often put up with in the spiritual situations we face? The clouds of trouble and trials come down and things grow dark. You feel threatened by those clouds and your vision dims. In reality, however, the only immediate danger is the dark shadow the clouds cast over your mind. It's a shadow that can leave you sitting in a darkness that makes it hard to see where you are or where you should head. Nevertheless, it's no good cursing the darkness. Instead turn to the Lord. Let Him be your light. Let the light in and the darkness will flee! Mic.7:7-8, Isa.50:10.

Get under the shadow of light that beams down on you as you take refuge under the Lord's wings. The scene of your life can be bright in spite of the dark clouds of trouble and trial that have moved against you. You are a child of the light. You always have Jesus' light to illuminate both the way ahead and your position right now. Live in the light of the Lord. Do this especially in times when darkness threatens! The Lord will be you light and illuminate your way forward to a bright new day! Mal.4:2, Eph.5:8, Psa.119:105.

Turn to the Lord your light!
