Are you growing?

by Pastor Simon

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.

1 Peter 2:1-2 - KJV

At the age of about four my son Arthur was asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" He replied quickly, "A big boy!" Spiritually we should all have this desire too. Of course, there's more to spiritual development than spiritual size. A giant can be very childish. Nevertheless, we need to grow in size and then as we do we can also grow in maturity, wisdom and strength.

You grow in size spiritually when you feed on God's Word. It is during times in your life when you are drinking in God's Word most that you grow most. You can measure how much spiritual growth you're going to get from how much of God's word you're receiving. Likewise, a good measure of your spiritual health is how good an appetite you've got for God's Word. The Bible portion above tells us we ought to be craving for the Word of God like a physical baby craves for milk. It also tells us that we need to be drinking it in without hindrance from any perverse ways.

What if you realise the measure of your spiritual appetite isn't good? What can you do about it? Do for your spiritual being what you would do for your physical being - get exercise, fresh air and awaken your taste buds with appetising food! Get spiritual exercise - like intercession, sharing the Gospel and acting on the word you've already got. Get spiritual fresh air - open yourself up to the breeze of the Holy Spirit on your life. Get appetising food - enjoy the soundly expounded Word of Truth.

Grow spiritually today on the Word of God!
