Ears for the Holy Spirit

by Pastor Simon

Christ...called by God as High Priest...of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

Hebrews 5:11 - NKJV

As children of God through Christ there is a ministry of the Holy Spirit into our lives. God's Spirit is a companion to us ready at all times to minister God's counsel to us. The Holy Spirit speaks to the churches for the well-being and security in Christ of every member. He ministers among us for our benefit. The question arises however, "How well are we hearing?" Take a moment to ask yourself, "How well am I hearing what the Holy Spirit would desire to speak into my life at this time?"

Many times the ministry of the Holy Spirit is towards getting us to make significant changes. This is not always easy to accept. Our reaction can be one of resistance. We react as if He was trying to deprive us of something instead of benefit us. Our natural man (the flesh) cries out, "Not that change - it means giving up my pleasure or craving!" If we give into that voice we will then shut our ears to the Spirit's ministry for change, namely, His exhortation. Ears shut to the Spirit's exhortation, are ears dull to the Spirit's instruction.

If you shut your ears to the Spirit's ministry of exhortation then you start having hearing problems in all areas of the Holy Spirit's ministry. For example, has the preaching of the pastor that you once found rich and full become hard for you to understand? This could be a sign your spiritual ears have become dull of hearing. People to whom it is hard to explain the things of God have become dull of hearing. You can avoid this hearing problem. Stay open to the Spirit's exhortation to you! Have ears for His exhortation so you can have ears for His instruction. Matthew 13:16.

Be blessed of hearing, not dull of hearing!
