Responding to Jesus' words

by Pastor Simon

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.

Matthew 11:28-30 - Peterson's Message Translation

I love the words of Jesus. In a few short sentences Jesus describes our needy condition, tells the solution to it and declares the glorious outcome of acting on the divine solution. In the Message translation Peterson has chosen words and phrases that marvellously convey Jesus encouragement.

As I read those words, I was stirred on the inside to respond with prayer and fresh commitment. I connected with what was said. Although I didn't feel in the condition suggested by the opening questions, nevertheless, I realised there was much in my life that needed recovering from. Taking a real rest sounded very attractive. The prospect of having life's load in Christ fitting snugly and not heavily sounded perfect. The hope of living freely and lightly sounded very fine indeed.

What about you? Has the scripture passage above awakened you to your condition? Are you eager to act on the solution? Are you excited over the expected outcome? 1) Respond in prayer - ask for a change to a 24-hour-a-day relationship with Jesus. 2) Respond in commitment - commit yourself to keeping company moment by moment with Jesus. 3) Respond in spiritual action - come out of what you're into without God and get away from it with Jesus!

Learn to live freely and lightly!
