God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus...And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus, 'I will give you the sure mercies of David'.

Acts 13:33-34 - NKJV

At the resurrection, God gave to Jesus the New Covenant. This covenant Jesus then established in His own blood! The Holy Spirit in the scripture above calls the New Covenant the "sure mercies of David". The Spirit shows us by this that the New Covenant is the everlasting covenant made with David, now given to Jesus that all people may have access to it. (2 Sam.7:8-16)

Jesus has become the David of this everlasting covenant and it is now called in Christ the New Covenant. We, as Christians, have become the children of the Covenant. We came to Jesus, accepting His sacrifice on Calvary, and - the moment we did - He made us His children. As a result, Jesus declared in Heaven regarding us, "Here am I and the children whom God has given Me!" Hebrews 2:13

Now here's the really exciting part of this revelation of the Holy Spirit - as Jesus is to David so we are to Solomon, David's son! As God prospered and established Solomon mightily and wonderfully for David's sake, so God desires to prosper and establish us just as mightily and wonderfully for Jesus' sake! We are to look to Solomon in the glory God gave Him as an example to us of God's faithfulness to covenant, His outworking of the "sure mercies of David"!
